"From Sea to Shining Sea: American Expansion and Cultural Change, 1790-1850" is the grand theme of Chautauqua in 2005 and 2006, coinciding with the Lewis and Clark bicentennial. Five scholars spend five days in a community, presenting first-person programs on William Clark, York, Sacagawea, John Jacob Astor, and Tecumseh, and offering twelve interpretive workshops for adults and children. Dolley Madison serves as each evening's moderator. The scholars emphasize the significant changes through which the nation went in those critical years. |
