Eudora Welty House

Endowment for educational programming and a Welty Scholar at the Eudora Welty House in Jackson, Mississippi.

The Mississippi Department of Archives and History is seeking a National Endowment for the Humanities Challange Grant of $450,000 toward a $1,800,000 campaign to make the Eudora Welty House one of America's leading literary house museums, with strong programming in the Humanities. NEH funding to be matched with $1,350,000 in non-federal funds will be used exclusively for a Welty House Educational Endowment fund. Through income generated by the grant funds MDAH proposes to provide the following: (a) part-time Welty scholar on staff to assure the intellectual basis of all educational programming and publications; (b) educational programs beginning in 2005 that will include teacher workshops, a Teaching Welty newsletter, a research grant stipend; a scholar-in-residence, annual symposia, panel discussions, literary programs, and in 2009 a biennial International Welty Conference. These programs will provide extensive education in the humanities athrough the presentation and interpretation of Eudora Welty's life and work, with a strong intellectual focus and, in accordance with Miss Welty's wishes, a strong emphasis on the place of literature in our culture.
