Endowment for the collection of an oral history archive, library and museum acquisitions, conferences, and publications.

The Virginia Military Institute (VMI) seeks a National Endowment for the Humanities challenge grant in order to permanently endow VMI's John A. Adams '71 Center for Military History and Strategic Analysis. Established in August 2003, the Adams Center examines how the Cold War (1945-1991) defined the second half of the twentieth century, a topic currently under-studied in most American history programs. The Adams Center is premised upon the idea that the history of this era can illuminate uniquely critical processes in today's post-Cold War world. Given the challenges of the current comparably open-ended war on terrorism, the Adams Center's sponsoring of Cold War scholarship can contribute significantly to on-going debates over the security of the United States. To ensure the Adams Center's existence and to accelerate this work, we request a grant of $500,000 from the National Endowment for the Humanities, which VMI will increase with $1.5 million of matching funds raised from private sources.
