A five-week institute for twenty-four college and university faculty members to explore Mesoamerica and the Ancient Southwest.

The Community College Humanities Association requests funding for a summer institute for twenty-four faculty from community and four-year colleges on the topic “Mesoamerica and the Southwest: A New History for an Ancient Land,” to be held from June 17 - July 23, 2012, on-site in Mexico and the Southwest. The Institute will explore the new interdisciplinary collaborative scholarship involving analysis and interpretation of the complex historical and cultural interconnections between these two regions of Ancient America. Ten internationally prominent scholars in this field will conduct seminars and site study-visits, focusing on why the ancient -- and modern -- Southwest should be understood in relation to the culture history of the whole of Pre-Columbian North America. Readings include classic case studies and more recent scholarly publications representative of the new collaborative work of Mexican, US and indigenous scholars on the historical and cultural studies of these regions.
