Development Ethics: Questions, Challenges, and Responsibilities

A four-week institute for twenty-five higher education faculty to engage in discussion and debate over critical issues in the field of development ethics.

The four-week 2013 NEH Summer Institute, "Development Ethics: Questions, Challenges and Responsibilities," concerns new directions in a young sub-field of ethics and social and political philosophy that has grown to maturity over the past thirty years, as evident weaknesses in global aid and development efforts of the mid and late 20th century impressed themselves upon philosophers. Co-directors Fred Gifford (Michigan State University) and Eric Palmer (Allegheny College) will collect institute participants at Michigan State University to review the first generation of scholarship and frame the entry of visiting speakers focused upon new directions for the second generation.
