To allow the departments of French, English, Linguistics and Oriental Studies at Barnard to develop a coherent undergraduate alternative to replace the present general requirements in the humanities. The new program will provide a methodological approach for an intellectually justifiable series of courses in the above departments as well as a team-taught seminar on the Theory and Practice in Translation. Student will develop an understanding of the Linguistic, literary, and philosophical traditions of other cultures, and of the way in which these cultures have been transmitted and assimilated into our own.
