The proposal seeks a grant for four-week National Summer Insitute from June 25 to July 20, 2007, for teachers of Italian K-12 whose knowledge of humanities will be greatly enriched by the study of Italian artists and their major works available in museums in Rome and Tuscany, Italy. The particpants will learn to teach the Italian Language via a content-based approach using Italian art and will be immersed in the Italian language and culture. They will be provided ample time to study, reflect and have direct contact with scholars. In addition the teachers will visit museums, churches and other sites in Tuscany. They will meet with aritsan living and working there. This will help the teachers practice techniques such as ceramics, mosaic and marble carving. The participants may elect to register for six (6) graduate credits. By having aquired a better understanding of humanities, the teachers will be able to provide more motivating and contextually richer lessons to their students.
