A four-week institute for twenty-six secondary school teachers to study two plays by William Shakespeare in the context of performance and the conditions and circumstances of Elizabethan staging.

The four (4) week Nat'l Institute on Teaching Shakespeare will engage 26 secondary school teachers in scholarly & practical investigations of two Shakespeare plays (and be exposed to two additional ones) in the context of performance and Elizabethan playing conditions. Leading scholars, historians, educators and professional theatre artists will provide multiple perspectives and insights into Shakespeare's plays to prepare the teachers to take on more dynamic roles in the classroom resulting in enhanced, active student learning. Teachers will accomplish the objectives through scholarly inquiry, participation in experiential activities and the collaborative creation of strategies, applications, and assessments for their own unique cultures and classrooms. Participants will also receive a multi-media study guide that includes classroom materials, activities, video and the appropriate instruction on its use to aid them in applying the new teaching approaches developed at the Institute.
