A three-week summer institute for twenty-five school teachers on the literary and cultural heritage of New York City's diverse Latino community.

We are proposing an intensive three-week summer institute for 25 high school teachers to study the fascinating and complex world of Latino Cultural Studies in New York City at Hunter College. The purpose of our institute is to examine the story of immigration in America through the eyes of Puerto Ricans, Cubans, Dominicans and Mexicans who have set down roots in New York City and have come to reevaluate their identity as Latinos and as Americans, all the while creating ties to their new home and transforming the neighborhoods where they live. We will investigate how this experience mutates into vibrant forms of music, art and literature.
