Mexican Literature and Culture in Context

A four-week summer institute for twenty-five school teachers of Spanish on Mexican literature and culture, to be held in Mexico City.

The twenty-first century challenges us to think globally and to develop links between language teaching and the humanities. This project supports a four-week Spanish Institute in Mexican literature and culture for 25 middle and high-school teachers. It will be held in Mexico City at La Salle University. The objective is to improve the quality of humanities education for middle and high school teachers by strengthening Spanish teachers' understanding of Mexican literature and culture. Through this program, teachers will focus on how historical and cultural contexts and individual works interact and affect the development of humanities over time. Instructional materials created for classroom use will allow the dissemination and perpetuation of the knowledge gained from the experience of this Institute. Today's students and teachers can benefit greatly from a strong foundation in the humanities and from a knowledge of foreign languages.
