To prepare a definitive text for all the poems of Hugo von Hofmannsthal (both those published during his lifetime and those that remained unpublished) together with meaningful variants found in printings and in manuscripts. In addition to the texts, the edition will also contain a detailed objective commentary. Replacing an earlier edition of the poems, this volume is part of a comprehensive forty-five volume edition of Hofmannsthal's works being published by S. Fischer Verlag of Frankfurt. Like Da Ponte was to Mozart, Hugo von Hofmannsthal poet and dramatist, is best remembered today for being the librettist of many of the great operas of Richard Strauss.
