Art and Astrology in Renaissance Italy

Astrological belief was pervasive in Renaissance Italy. Astronomers, including Kepler and Galileo, believed that astrology explained physical and mathematical principles that the Creator had set into the cosmos. Patrons commissioned art and architecture that embodied astrological ideas. Many believed that cities, architecture, even clothing and jewels, could be correctly tuned to a cosmic harmony if mathematical astrology were properly practiced. This book examines the astrological content in the art and architecture of 15th and 16th century Italy. It also traces, through the writings of Renaissance intellectuals, their understandings of how astrology worked with art.
