A history of the immediate postwar population transfer of eight million people to and from Japan, the book manuscript "When Empire Comes Home: Repatriation in Postwar Japan" analyzes how the human remnants of the Japanese empire served as sites of negotiation for Japan's disengagement from empire. This project makes contributions to the fields of twentieth-century Japanese social and political history, migration studies, and decolonization.
