Challenging the State: American Indians and the ‘Empire of Liberty’, 1800-2000 will be a history of American Indians and their engagement with the political institutions of the United States. It will trace the diverse origins of modern indigenous political activism by recounting the two-century-long struggle of Native Americans to establish a legal and political space for themselves within the U.S. state. The book will be comprised of eight chronologically-arranged essays, each focused on an individual who became engaged with the American legal system. |
