I have been commissioned to write a detailed study of Albrecht Dürer (1471-1528). There has not been a serious monograph by an English-language author since Erwin Panofsky's classic book (1943). I plan to examine the artist, his art and extensive writings, his cultural context, his engagement with other artists, and his fascinating posthumous fame. The book will incorporate the superb research of the past 25 years, especially the investigations of his technique, methods, and sources. I am particularly interested in the function and reception of his art and writings both within his lifetime and in subsequent centuries. The book is designed for specialists and interested students alike.
