This book examines the entanglements of violence, territoriality, and the writing of landscape history in a western district of Indonesian Borneo. I contend that landscapes, as working, material domains of practice and sites of remembrance and representation, are territories. In Indonesia, competing territorialities have repeatedly led to mass violence. Drawing from my own fieldwork and writing on West Kalimantan since 1990, as well as archival and secondary sources, I examine how violence, territoriality, and the telling of landscape history have reshaped access to and control over the agrarian landscape.
