Holy Land Fictions: The Voyage to Jerusalem and Constantinople in the Medieval French Tradition
I seek twelve months of funding to complete the research and writing of my book, "Holy Land Fictions: The Voyage to Jerusalem and Constantinople in the Medieval French Tradition." This will be the first book-length study of the various iterations of a politically potent Crusading-era legend that told of how Charlemagne liberated the Holy Lands after a call for help from the Byzantine emperor. By the late twelfth-century, the journey to Jerusalem and Constantinople was a thriving tale in the vernacular verse traditions of both France and Anglo-Norman England, and by the late thirteenth century, it was an official chapter in French dynastic history. The book will have wide appeal for those interested in medieval history, medieval literature, the Crusades, Carolingian studies, and the medieval Charlemagne legend. I aim to submit the manuscript for publication at the end of the funding period.
