The unpublished diaries (1827-1840) of Clara Wieck (later Schumann), (1819-1896) present a unique chronicle and detailed descriptions of daily, musical, and cultural life in Germany, Austria, and Paris in an age when few women entered public life. Although excerpts from the diaries have appeared in biographies of Clara Wieck Schumann, pianist and composer, the diaries have never been published in full. The annotations to the translation from the German will provide a commentary on the text and the identification of people and events needed for a full understanding of this period of European cultural history.
