"Paris africain: Rhythms of the African Diaspora" is both the title of this project and of the author's book under contract, the culmination of nearly eight years of research on musicians from former French colonies in West and Central Africa living as immigrants in Paris, where they have been a significant presence since the early 1980s. This study seeks to tell their stories and that of the complex and shifting responses of French society in the last twenty years or more, where immigrant musicians especially have been caught in the contradictions between welcome and rejection, part of a larger story of France coming to terms, however painfully, with its newly diverse character.
