I aim to write a series of three papers on how our sense of proprioception--our inner sense of the positions and movements of our own bodies--allows us to experience beauty, grace and other aesthetic qualities. The project counters a long tradition that disparages the body as an object of aesthetic appreciation and addresses an area of philosophy of dance, namely, the role of proprioception in perceiving dance, that, while clearly important to understanding dance, has to a large degree been overlooked.
