This grant will support the final research and writing of a book on ancient Maya dance, to be published by an academic press. Even though dance was a prominent form of religious and political expression among the Maya, there is at present no thorough study of the subject. The book will explore the cultural and historical significance of dance performances in the ancient Maya world and the various methods by which the subject may be investigated. Research will be undertaken at libraries and archives both in the U.S. and overseas. The project is particularly significant, owing not only to its interdisciplinary and innovative nature, but also because it fills a major gap in the literature on the Maya.
