THE SUBJECT OF BRITAIN explores responses to the increasingly intersecting and intermingling cultures of the British Isles in early seventeenth-century Britain and Ireland. The centerpiece of my study is what I term "Union literature": discourse on political and cultural union spawned by the dynastic union of 1603. My project attends to wide-ranging and profound reflections on Britain and Britishness, which, I argue, invite fresh investigation of such topics as race, hybridity, cultural memory, and the production, circulation, and reception of knowledge.
