Music and Meaning in the Cinema of Federico Fellini: from "Lo sceicco bianco" to "8 1/2"

Music in narrative film almost always functions as a subliminal reinforcement that cues viewers' emotional responses to the visial image. Federico Fellini radically alters cinematic conventions by using Nino Rota's soundtracks as a vehicle for meaning as well as feeling. In Fellini's films the soundtrack acts as an internal voice that interprets the visual image on an intellectual plane as well as on an emotional one. Much as the study of prosody reveals the relationships between forms and themes in poetry, this project will bring to light the beauty and significance of the pairing of music and image in Fellini's early films.
