The Correspondence of Caroline Schlegel-Schelling, Leader in Early German Romanticism, 1763-1809: An Annotated Translation
I have already translated the text proper of both volumes of letters. Schlegel-Schelling is best known for having been at the center of the early German Romantic circle in Jena. This correspondence, which has been called part of the "essential documentation" of Early Romanticism, copiously documents intellectual and cultural life, daily life, and German and European history in the late 18th/early 19th century. My expanded scholarly apparatus will address the needs of English-speaking non-specialists who, unlike the original target audience, are not familiar with German literary and cultural history at large or with early German Romanticism specifically and who are unlikely to have access to the sometimes obscure sources Schmidt cites, all of which are in German in any case. I will resolve and clarify his original annotations and add indexes and glosses to make the collection accessible to non-specialists.
