My goal is to make further progress on a state-of-the-art catalogue of Greek medieval and Renaissance manuscripts in American libraries. A comprehensive, up-to-date, and modern catalogue is long overdue. Since 2001 I have described, analyzed, classified, and compared distinctive characteristics of Greek manuscripts. The catalogue entry system I use meets all contemporary requirements, and I have developed some innovative interpretive approaches. I view a manuscript as a product of a particular time, region, circle, and cultural and historical context. My analysis of scripts, decorations, notations, and production materials and techniques often establishes when, where, by whom, and under what circumstances a manuscript was produced and disseminated. This information benefits scholars in many fields of the humanities--especially social and art history, philology and paleography, and philosophy and theology. |
