An NEH Fellowship will enable me to complete a book on a unique topic in the field of classical literature. Based on my scholarly expertise in the study of the Roman poet Ovid (43 BCE-17 CE), I will examine Ovid's engagement with the Homeric epics Iliad and Odyssey throughout his career. This book will consider in depth Ovid's reading and reinterpretation of Homer, and will give literary scholars both in and outside of my discipline new insight into the dynamics of a literary tradition. Ovid's poetry has had a lasting impact on the artists, writers, and intellectuals in western cultures---and now, in world cultures---for 2000 years; my project will make an important contribution to our understanding of this impact.
