This NEH summer seminar will address one of the fundamental issues raised by the study of antiquity: What does it mean to say Rome fell? Unlike other attempts to analyze the fall in terms of the political and military end of the Roman Empire, this seminar will focus on the capital of that empire, the city of Rome, in the late third to the seventh centuries. Through intensive study of newly relevant texts and new archaeological remains, the seminar participants will analyze five key crises that have led historians and archaeologists to view Rome as a "fallen" city. The impact of these crises and responses to them by individuals and groups changed the fabric and institutions of the city, and enabled Rome to be recreated in ways that have had long-lasting influence. |
