America and China: 150 Years of Aspirations and Encounters

A three-week summer seminar for sixteen college and university teachers on U.S.-China political and cultural relations from the 1850s to the present.

This seminar will present 16 participants with the complicated and telling "dreams" that have impacted US-China relations. The seminar will feature reading, film, discussion, and research on how Chinese and American governments and peoples have dreamed about one another: from American dreams to Christianize and "civilize" the Chinese, to the Chinese dreams of the economic power that becoming more "American" could offer, to these-and other dreams-being upset and becoming nightmarish. The seminar will feature giants in the field: Dan Bays and Dong Wang as co-directors, with Grant Wacker, Chas Freeman, Terry Lautz, and others as guests. The theme is important as scholars need to understand one of the most important bilateral relationships in the modern world. The topic is of paramount importance to the humanities, in general, as it speaks to how people across the globe (mis)understand one another and how these perceptions effect political and cultural outcomes.
