This project traces the long and dramatic influence of New York City over the Catskill Mountains. Just one hundred miles up the Hudson River from the metropolis, these mountains have been shaped and reshaped by the demands of the city. Over two hundred years the Catskills have been transformed repeatedly in conception and reality, as New Yorkers sought to fulfill different needs in the mountains, including natural resource extraction, tourism, and the water supply. This project will focus primarily on the environmental consequences of the city's influences on the mountains, but cultural and economic consequences must also be addressed. |
