In Brazil, the emerging anti-racist movement among evangelical Protestants has embraced Soul and rap music. To what extent and in what ways has the movement's embrace of these musical genres helped to produce new ideas about "being black"? What effects are these genres, as touched by the movement, having on the consciousness of the who are exposed to them? Are they contributing to the growth of the antiracist struggle? Through two months of participant observation, and forty ethnographic interviews, I intend to gather data to answer these questions and to shed light on the potential of the black evangelical movement in Brazil to wage a successful campaign against racism.
