This study examines pre-Romanesque marginalia and decorated initials as aspects of larger iconographic programs, centered upon an analysis of the Book of Kells. The primary objective is the completion of one remaining chapter and an appendix of a monograph that suggests the minor imagery, script layout and full-page images within the Book of Kells reflect a cohesive theme: the role of the gospel book as an instrument of salvation. Four Courts Press (Dublin) is considering the monograph for publication. |
