This project is a community study of Putnam County, Indiana during the Civil War and Reconstruction periods. Putnam County had been settled by Southerners and was a center of anti-war protest yet many of its young men fought for the Union. This project follows the experience of residents thorugh the war and measures their reaction to war, emancipation, Reconstruction, and nationhood. It studies the experience of war on the home front, the relationship of civilians to soldiers, and Northern reaction to, and shaping of, Civil War and Reconstruction.
