The Mexican Miracle in the Era of the Cuban Revolution

This project examines the impact of the Cuban revolution on Mexican nationalism and its implications for U.S.-Mexican relations during the 1960s. Eschewing interpretations that suggest an omnipotent Mexican state steamrollering its opposition without consequence, I instead demonstrate the complex and contingent nature of this period by locating a discussion of Mexican nationalism within a framework encompassing social protest, cultural politics, and international relations. At the same time, the project moves away from overly determinative arguments that suggest a unidirectional hegemonic influence by the United States “over” Mexico, instead demonstrating a carefully negotiated and ultimately symbiotic U.S.-Mexican relationship.
