I am writing a monograph in which I view the role of women in medieval Germany through the lens of the artistic patronage of the royal abbesses of Essen and Quedlinburg. The study opens with a chapter on medieval German history and the concept of the royal convent system. In the second chapter, I discuss the histories of Essen and Quedlinburg. The third and fourth chapters constitute an analysis of commissions that can be linked to the royal abbesses. In my final chapter, I indicate how foregrounding the material evidence for the self-image and function of the royal abbesses can further our understanding of the role of the visual arts and of their female patrons within the sacro-political context of the German Middle Ages. |
