This project entails the completion of a manuscript on the Orsini family palace at Monte Giordano in Rome. Recent on-site and archival research reveals that Monte Giordano was Rome's first Renaissance palace, one that served as a model for the ideal palaces in the treatises of Antonio Averlino (Filarete) and Paolo Cortesi. This study examines Monte Giordano in the contexts of social, artistic, and architectural history, and demonstrates that the palace's evolution during the Renaissance reflects the rise and fall of the Orsini family and the gradual decline of Rome's feudal nobility. By funding a final period of archival research and documentation, this grant will substantially support the first monographic study of this site.
