This project is a comprehensive reexamination of c. 600 amphoras (large ceramic transport jars) from a 7th c. A.D. shipwreck excavated in the early 1960s near Bodrum, Turkey. The study will contribute to broader issues concerning the public and private nature of Late Roman/early Byzantine commerce and taxation. By using new methodologies and models, questions regarding the production and consumption of the jars and their contents, the jars’ cultural function(s), and the nature of the ship’s final voyage will be addressed. |
