Race and Children's Literature of the Gilded Age

Race and Children's Literature of the Gilded Age is a digital archive that will present texts that show how constructions of racial identity and childhood intersected during the late nineteenth century. It will provide page scans, rigorously edited transcriptions, searchable images, and commentary on books and other popular culture materials that 1) were first published in the US between 1865 and 1911, 2) were intended to be read by children, and 3) feature characters of different races. It will include works by several principal Northern and Southern American authors, such as Mark Twain, Joel Chandler Harris, Annie Fellows Johnston, Thomas Nelson Page, and L. Frank Baum. Popular culture materials will include selections from Uncle Remus Magazine, St. Nicholas, and Windsor McKay's Little Nemo stories.
