I seek funding to support research on my monograph, To Become German: Heidegger’s Hölderlin. This monograph will be the first book length study to examine Heidegger’s "dialogue" with the poet Friedrich Hölderlin, and has been conceived as a companion volume to the forthcoming publication of Heidegger’s two remaining Hölderlin lecture courses, which I am co-translating. These translations will not only significantly change the field of Heidegger scholarship by making available works previously inaccessible, the content of the courses will contribute to the debate on the relationship between Heidegger’s philosophy and his politics. The book thus fills a gap in the current scholarship: It uses the detailed analysis of Heidegger’s interpretations of individual poems to critically examine how Heidegger’s politics have been understood by calling into question basic philosophical assumptions about the interpretation of poetry, its relationship to a people, and the nature of action.
