One of the most celebrated and prolific American film directors of the last forty years, Robert Altman has a substantial following that includes scholars working in film, music, American history, media studies, and other areas of the humanities; journalists and film critics; and a large, cinematically literate fan base that includes the general public. My project examines Altman's use of music and sound using newly available archival sources, contextualized within the larger framework of his varied and unpredictable career and the changing Hollywood film industry. With the support of an NEH summer stipend, I will complete my archival research and write a portion of the book, which is under contract with Oxford University Press. This interdisciplinary volume will greatly enrich and expand the scholarly dialogue on the director's work while methodologically diversifying the field of film music studies.
