The Material Culture of the Revolutionary Atlantic, 1776-1810
My project examines the material culture of the age of democratic revolutions (1776-1810). Most historians emphasize the importance of written texts -- treaties, pamphlets, broadsides -- in the transmission of revolutionary ideas that motivated people to action. But other ways of conveying views and information complemented print culture. Engravings, furniture, ceramics, and sculpture, among other articles, were disseminated throughout the Atlantic world and spread news about events in North America, Europe, and the Caribbean. My investigation based on these sources transforms our understanding of the age of revolutions by illuminating the manifold channels through which radical ideologies and images circulated.
