In order to facilitate the completion of the two remaining chapters of my book, The 'Falls of Rome': The Transformations of Rome in Late Antiquity (270-603), I will visit relevant sites from the area around Rome, the suburbium, and in Sicily. I will conduct research and speak with excavators about on-going work to clarify the disparity between archeologists who posit that the late fifth-century suburbium was barren, and the textual evidence from post 476 Rome which suggests the slow restoration of the city's population and the strong economic and political influence of the senatorial aristocracy. Currently, there is no book on late antique Rome that covers this period (270-603) in English. |
