Philadelphia's Economy in an Age of Atlantic World Revolutions

A four-week summer seminar for fifteen school teachers on Philadelphia's economic development during the era of the American Revolution and in the context of the Atlantic economy.

This four-week seminar will engage fifteen teachers and the seminar director in an examination of important secondary scholarship and key primary documents about Philadelphia's urban, regional, and Atlantic World economy during the revolutionary turmoil from 1763 to 1804. The seminar's particular focus -- the economic development of Philadelphia and its ever-changing citizenry during the Atlantic World's turbulent revolutionary era -- has attracted attention from numerous scholars for generations, and has left a dense trail of sources and interpretations that will enrich teachers' own understandings not only of this particular case study, but of revolution in general and the immense repercussions of the American Revolution in, and far beyond, the city.
