This project involves studying the history of Wisconsin and the Midwest region from the colonial period through Reconstruction in order to weave more regional history into my U.S. history survey course. Currently, I regularly teach two sections every semester of "U.S. History to 1877". This course attracts students who are interested in history, but it also attracts many students who want to get their General Education requirements out of the way and do not necessarily have any interest in history. I have noticed that students seem to be more engaged when I can connect major events to the upper Midwest.
