At Sea and On Shore: Work and Community in New Bedford’s Fishing Industry
Planning
for a permanent exhibition on labor history in New Bedford’s fishing industry from the 1930s
to the present.
The New Bedford Fishing Heritage Center seeks a $40,000 planning grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) to fund a portion of the costs associated with the research and planning for an exhibit about the nature of work in the New Bedford-Fairhaven fishing industry, focusing on the history of organized labor at sea and onshore from the 1930s to the present. The research done through this project will form the basis for the Center’s first major exhibition that will be initially housed in a 2000 SF space with the goal of opening to the public in 2019.The project team will investigate the history of unions and other industry and community organizations, including their formation, role, and demise/dissolution, through a combination of archival research and oral history interviews and develop an interpretive plan.
