Hope & Healing: The Untold Story of the Ellis Island Hospital

Production of a one-hour television documentary about the Ellis Island immigrant hospital.

Hope and Healing is the first documentary film produced about the Ellis Island immigrant hospital, which served the hundreds of thousands of aliens seeking entrance through New York in the years between 1892 and 1924. Part of an elaborate system of medical inspection conducted by the U.S. Public Health Service on behalf of the federal immigration officials, the immigrant hospital at Ellis Island is an important and little-known chapter in American history. The film challenges popular myths about Ellis Island as it explores the hospital's place at the intersection of American immigration history, social history, the rise of professional medicine, and the emerging field of public health.
