Gaston Kaboré: Twenty-Five Years of African Filmmaking
This project is the first monograph on African film pioneer, Gaston Kaboré. It will examine the aesthetic, cultural, and historical dimensions of his twenty-five years of filmmaking. Many critics judge him only on his feature-length films and thus assume that he avoids taking social or political stands. My analysis of his entire oeuvre, and in particular of his lesser-known documentaries, will prove that Kaboré has an activist voice. I will exemplify his positions on such matters as energy conservation, global warming, and African urban life. This book-format monograph will become a reference for scholars, students, film professionals and African art enthusiasts. I will also disseminate my findings in a new course on African Cinema.
