This proposal seeks funding to provide ethnographic and archaeological support for the ongoing restoration and preservation project at the Socorro Mission of El Paso, Texas. The Socorro Mission, founded in 1682, is a National Register of Historic Places and Texas Landmark site. The Socorro Mission and other El Paso Missions are among the oldest European settlements in the United States and are located along the Camino Real that connected colonial New Spain to New Mexico. Ethnographic and archaeological studies of the Mission will make primary contributions to the history of the American Southwest and debates about historical preservation. |
