Male and Female Views of Economic Agency in Early Modern English Verse
My book shows how early modern English poets writing during the transition to capitalism imagined relations between people and property. Analyzing lyrics about love tokens and houses, it exposes how women poets depict connections between female sexuality and property ownership differently in relation to their life stages (maid, wife, widow). My study reveals strategies women poets used to assert themselves as subjects of property and economic agents despite an ideology assuming women to be vehicles for men's wealth. It also highlights differences in how male and female poets imagine ownership and reveals patriarchal anxieties associated with female economic agency in a culture in which women were often treated as property themselves.
