Making Place in the Campus Environment: Preserving the Legacy of Historically Black College Campuses

American colleges and universities are planned environments much like cities and towns. The university setting is a nurturing environment which symbolizes its history and celebrates the institution’s endurance. While the planning/architectural history of such institutions is well documented, little mention is made of the historically black college and university (HBCU) or their “town and gown” relationships. This research will explore and document the historic architectural and physical development of ten HBCUs. It will also look at the role of the African American architect and planner in shaping the campus environments over time.
