Ohio was a key state in national affairs during the troubled time of Lincoln's administration. CSCC, with 24,000 students, is located in the diverse city of Columbus, Ohio. It is connected to the Civil War as an Underground Railroad site and an African-American population rooted in historical churches. Today, a quarter of CSCC students represent African-American or other ethnic groups. Public programs will engage the nearby historic King-Lincoln District as well as refugees and immigrants to learn how Lincoln addressed challenges to democracy. CSCC will showcase its faculty - musicians, scholars, and political activists who also teach. Columbus Metropolitan Library is a committed partner as is Shiloh Baptist Church, a registered historical site. Bruce Massis, MLS, MA, will use grant funds to produce materials about the public programs; expand the Librarys circulating collection of Lincoln-themed books and audio-visual resources; and provide honoraria to pubic program speakers.
